Pilot Study:
"GIS Mapping
for Neighborhoods Resource Center and
Mayor's Office
of Neighborhoods
Community Livability
Audits"
Summer - Fall Semester 2002
Funded by the TSU Massie Chair of Excellence
Program
Hardcopies of
community livability audits conducted by several Nashville community organizations
were obtained by the TSU GISc Lab. The audit forms (Figure
6) were created by the Neighborhoods
Resources Center. Charlkia was primarily responsible for logging
data from the hardcopy, handwritten reports into spreadsheet format.
The spreadsheets were then converted into *.dbf
format and then converted into digital map
form using the ArcView GIS "geocoding" process. Selected neighborhood
maps are displayed below. The maps show the potential utility
of GIS in
graphically depicting
the extent of blight, decay, and other problems impacting urban
neighborhoods.
The maps can be used to gain the attention of municipal agencies and encourage
them to expedite remediation and corrective actions.
