SCARBORO COMMUNITY DEMOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS
1990-2000
By: Tina D. Kirk
INTRODUCTION
I conducted a demographic analysis
on the community of Scarboro. Scarboro is a predominatly African
American communtity (Table 1). Figure 1 shows the block group of
residents living in the Scarboro communityduring 1990. Scarboro is
located in the upper central area of the blockgroup. Figure 2 shows
the block group of Scarboro for the year 2000. As you can see there's
an area missing from the 1990 block group, but on-site research has proven
that the missing area did not consist of any residents residing there.
If you notice Chart 1, you will see the demographic change of races living
in the Scarboro community over the time period of 1990-2000. Chart
2 gives you data on the age group change in the Scarboro community during
1990-2000. As you can see the population consists of persons of older
age. The younger generation apparently is moving out of the Scarboro
community to different locations in Oak Ridge, off to school, or
to different states.
METHODOLOGY
I created the map in Figure 1, by using
the Landview III Environmental Mapping Software. This mapping process
consisted of me typing in the Oak Ridge location and searching
the Oak Ridge location for the Scarboro community area. I created
the Figure 2 map by using the U.S. Census "American Factfinder" which is
located at www. census.gov. Chart 1 and Chart 2 were created after
I received information from "American Factfinder" about Scarboro's demographic
change during 1990-2000 and the age group change during 1990-2000.
Both charts were created in Microsoft Excel after all the data was received.
The totals for the census blocks comprising of the Scarboro community were
put in a table (Table 1). The table was created in the Netscape composer.
