Reported by: Tina Kirk

Tina Kirk meets with Scarboro Community Capacity Building Project advocates.
From left to right, Mr. John Rosenthal, Dr. Lonnie Sharpe, Tina Kirk, and Mr. James Hill.

John Rosenthal from Urban Technology informed the group of the assistance they could issue the Scarboro community.  He said they would gain access to the internet, receive technical assistance, and assistance from Massie Chairs,
which consisted of technical advisors.  Dr. Sharpe, the Samuel Massie Chair of Excellence at Tennessee State University, offered assistance with soil and water testing.  John Rosenthal spoke about the success of the Savannah Georgia Project, which is similar to the Scarboro project.  James Hill, a representative for Scarboro, confirmed that Scarboro is seeking a
resource center and planning to make internet access available for the community.
Mr. Hill is concerned with funding for internet access.  He also informed us that the EPA’s sample study still has no
findings, but the information will be available soon.  The representative of the NAACP mentioned that health impacts the EPA
evaluation.  She mentioned that the Health Impact Subcommittee is setting up a website.Information gathered
from Florida A&M University (FAMU) will be available.

I feel this meeting was a great start to get the goals of the Scarboro project known. I now know what Scarboro
is trying to accomplish as far as improving the community I’m from.I feel the improvements for Scarboro are a great idea.
A resource center for the community is great and it will be worth building if the residents take advantage of it.It will be a waste if the residents don’t support it.  I’m looking forward to whatever assistance I can offer this summer.  I support the plans for Scarboro and I hope everything will fall in place soon.
