An Overview of the Scarboro
Youth Computer Training Class

Monday: We begin the youth class at 3:00 p.m.  The youth that participated were: Keanna, Nickolas, Kortni, Jordan, Janicia, Emily, and Felicia's daughters April, and Domonique.  First, we let them introduce themselves and we asked what type of computer knowledge they already had. We found that two of the youth were advanced and the rest were intermediate.  We also had one beginner.  We gave everyone a quiz on computer terms to see what he or she know and did not know.  Last we had them start typing a letter to anyone of their choice.

Tuesday:  Felicia gave the two advanced students different assignments from the other students. They worked in Microsoft Access.  We taught the others how to bold, underline, and italicize the fonts. They learned to change the font style and the size.  We taught them how to use the different tools on the toolbar.  They finished typing their letter and we had them to change the font size, style, and color. We had them bold, and copy and paste in their letters.  They had to create a letter using word art and auto shapes. We did give a quiz each day to make sure they remembered what they were taught the previous day.

Wednesday:  We had them create a letterhead for their letter they typed.  They used word art to create their letterheads.  The advanced students finished working on their music database.  We started the Internet briefly.  We showed them different search engines, and the TSU website, the Massie Chair of Excellence website, and the GIS lab website.  We let them playaround on the Internet.

Thursday:  They got their email accounts. They were taught to compose, reply, and check their emails. They were assigned a person in the class to email.   They were assigned a person in the class to email.  They also had to email Mr. Hill and myself.  They had to attach their letters from Microsoft Word and send it to their assigned person.  They also learned how to add names to their address book.

Friday:  They were giving a quiz to see what they remembered. We asked them if they wanted another training class and what they wanted to learn at the next one. They got to play on the Internet the rest of the class.
